Ethiopia Girma Bekele Gr1 Natural

Girma Bekele, a young coffee farmer based in the village of Biloya, was always destined to be a coffee farmer. Growing up in a coffee farming family, Girma helped his father look after the family farm, especially during times of harvest and processing. Over time, this helped Girma develop a great interest in coffee farming and producing high quality coffee.

After high school Girma trained as a nurse and even worked at a local clinic. But his love of coffee was too strong, so when Girma inherited a 5 hectare coffee farm from his family in 2007 Girma quit his job at the clinic and became a full time coffee farmer. At that point most of the coffee trees on the farm were poor yielding and susceptible to disease. Girma replaced these with higher yielding, disease resistant varieties and set about producing high quality coffee. Currently, Girma has varieties including Walisho, Dega, Kurume and 74112 on his farm. Girma likes to experiment and has tried different processing techniques including anaerobic natural coffees. He is also the only farmer in his area who floats coffee cherries under water to sort out inferior coffees, including those that have insect damage, over and under ripeness,  before drying on raised beds.

We really enjoyed this coffee from Girma. It’s complexity delivers a basket of tropical fruits and florals that also remind us of washed coffees from Yirgachefe.
